Client :Indian Operations of
a leading American bank.
The client, one of the largest banks in the United States
of America, has an extensive retail banking network in ten
western US states. Globally the bank operates in 36 countries.
The domestic and global operations of the bank are automated
with the help of four major data centers of which three are
in U.S.A and one in the UK.
The bank had been operating in the wholesale banking segment
in India for several years. With the liberalization of financial
and banking sector in India, the bank launched several retail
products in India, which include savings and current accounts,
time deposit accounts, consumer loans, credit cards, ATMs
and home banking. The bank decided to use existing IBM &
Tandem mainframe facilities in the UK for computerization
of its Indian operations. High-speed data communication links
were set up between its branches in India and the data center
in the UK. Also, several local area networks linked to wide
area networks using IBM PC compatibles were set up in the
branch offices and at the back office in Chennai.
Several software packages were purchased from North American
vendors for acceleration of customization and implementation
of major systems, which support the retail products. Besides
these, several packages were developed in the areas of application
processing of loans & credit cards, charge slip processing,
home banking, loan payment processing and marketing. A large
number of interfaces between these major and several other
smaller systems were identified to provide total integration
of all systems.

VAST carried out the customization of various IBM mainframe
based modules of packages acquired by the bank, and also developed
major interfaces on IBM Mainframes, to facilitate transfer
of data between the mainframes located in the UK and the PC
LANs at the branches in India. The analysis and design of
all major interfaces to and from Customer Information Systems,
Loans, Deposits, General Ledger, Bank Card System and the
Collection Systems were completed by VAST. Following this,
VAST also assisted in the development of an enhancement to
the Deposit System to calculate penalty amounts on premature
withdrawal of time deposits based on the guidelines of the
Reserve Bank of India. In addition, VAST also led the design
and development effort for a complete MIS for the client,
which would integrate and consolidate necessary data for them,
on the IBM mainframe. Besides these development efforts, VAST’s
team also assisted in Quality Assurance testing of PC packages
developed by other vendors.
