Client : A leading poultry,
meat and fish products manufacturing firm in the Caribbean
POSTS was developed for the distribution division of one of
the largest poultry, meat and fish products manufacturing
and distribution firms in the Caribbean islands. The division’s
truckers deliver products every day to customers based on
orders downloaded in their mobile PC at the end of the previous
day. Invoice is also generated at the Point-of-Sale using
a portable thermal printer and given to the customer. Customer
payment data based on various authorized payment modes allowed
to the customer is also captured at the Point-of-Sale, followed
by reconciliation of collections at the warehouse, where the
lodgment of daily transaction data is carried out by the truckers
at the end of the day.
Due to the obsolescence of the hardware and increasing lack
of support for the environment in which the application software
was built, the client decided to migrate the point of sale
application to the latest hardware and software technologies,
besides incorporating improved features such as bar-code scanning
etc.
POSTS was developed offshore by VAST, at its development center
in Chennai, India. The target technology environment for POSTS
was the PalmOS based Symbol SPT 1800 device, which is a PDA
cum barcode scanner and communicator.
VAST designed and developed the new front end Point-of-Sale
software running on the PDA as well as the conduit and bridges
for transferring data to and from the backend database to
the PDA. The entire design, development effort was carried
out offshore, with a short 10 days’ implementation and
onsite training phase at the customer’s location in
the Caribbean.
