Client: A Europe based container
terminal, one of the largest worldwide.
Since it was founded in 1966, the customer has grown into
Europe's biggest and most advanced container terminal operator,
handling close to three-quarters of all containers passing
through a major European port. Together, the container terminals
in this port form a compact, integrated operation, known worldwide
as a trailblazing, innovative organization.
This project was mainly undertaken by consultants from VAST
to see how a better information technology environment would
help achieve higher productivity.
The client had observed from its own study that the average
time taken per container for loading/unloading was four seconds.
As the volume of container handling is the benchmark for market
measure, the client needed to know how better technology would
help in reducing the average time from 4 to 2.5 seconds.
The client was mainly using some Mainframe based databases.
They also had some portable devices attached to overhead cranes
to track moving containers. These devices would capture the
data and transmit it to the Mainframe. VAST carried out a
detailed study of the then existing system onsite and handed
over a full report to the client on possible areas of performance
improvement through IT to increase container throughput.
